Derry's Community Wildfire Protection Plan

Summary: Derry has the highest risk for wildfire in the State of NH due in part to increasing population and increased interface between wild spaces and human spaces. Non-native and invasive insects and diseases that attack trees are also increasing our risk of wildfire by defoliating trees that would otherwise provide shade (keeping the forest floor moist and resistant to wildfire), and creating fuel in the form of dead wood. One of the ways Derry can address these risks is by creating a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). These plans are collaboratively developed between the local fire department, local government, and state forest protection bureau. Derry’s CWPP will identify actions we can take to reduce the risk of wildfire in our town, and help make Derry more competitive to receive grants for larger projects that can help reduce our wildfire risk.
